The
engineered and patented
EarthBag Construction system
utilises specially designed
and patented polypropylene
bags, developed and
manufactured in Cape Town,
South Africa.
The unique
design of the bags and the
way that they are employed
in the EarthBag Construction
System, results in
structures that have an
unrivalled combination of
characteristics. These are
summarised below.
• environmentally friendly -
using locally produced,
recycled
by-product
• 70% carbon footprint
reduction compared with
standard materials
• minimal timber and water usage
• superb thermal insulation- summer
cool and winter warmth
• exceptional acoustic damping
• structurally-sound and durable
• termite and corrosion proof
• non-toxic, fire and mortar
resistant and bullet proof!
• inexpensive
• excellent job creation and community microbusiness opportunities
• user-friendly and easy to build
• temporary structures quickly
erected and de-constructed, all materials available for re-use
Engineering
data and professional
support - the EarthBag
Construction System was the
subject of study in the
department of structural
engineering at the CApe
Peninsula University of
Technology in 2008. The
system was tested to
Agrement Board
specifications and easily
exceeded the specified
standards.
The system
is now being used in a
sustainable design for Engen
Petroleum International, who
have a multi-million dollar
programme of service station
construction in Central and
East Africa. They have
adopted the system owing to
it's comprehensive
addressing of the'triple
bottom line' - economic,
environmental and social
sustainability.
They have
also chosen the system for a
high-profile project in
Cibitoke Province, Burundi,
at the specific request of
the President of Burundi,
His Excellency Pierre
Nkurunziza.
As an
example of how the system
will slash the cost of
transport in a major
construction project,
sufficient EarthBags to
build the walls for two
hundred 40m2
houses, can
be
transported in
one standard 12
metre shipping container!
